Summer 2018 Reading List

Here’s another list to add to your “have-to-read” collection. Trust me, I think mine is at least a mile long. These are books that I’ve read or are sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read.

1. A Game of Thrones– George RR Martin

The first of many books in the epic saga, A Game of Thrones. I am halfway through and it’s absolutely perfect. It helps to watch the show beforehand though, so you can put a face to every single character. In the first 50 pages, I think Mr. Martin introduced at least 25 characters. I’m so excited to read the other books and compare it to the HBO series.

2. The First Time She Drowned– Kerry Kletter

A heart-wrenching story of mental health, the institutional life, and messed up family dynamics. I highly recommend this book, but I have to warn you that you will cry and you will not want to put the book down. Plus, the book is on sale right now. (Score!)

3. Dark Matter– Blake Crouch

A sci-fi, futuristic novel that I honestly read in one day. I don’t read that quickly, but it was so good that I could not put it down, unless I was getting coffee. It’s an easier read, and a book I should have left for a stormy day. This book will make you think afterwards about what the future will entail.

4. It– Stephen King

A classic in reading, It is about a group of kids battling against their biggest fears. It was a movie in the 80s and was a huge hit in 2017. I’m only halfway through this novel, but it is so much better than the movies. There is a lot more detail that’s important to the story that gets cut out in cinema.

5. The Glass Castle– Jeanette Walls

This book is a memoir of a young girl growing up in a poor family, along with an alcoholic father. I have yet to read this, but it’s a book I can’t wait to read since I grew up with an alcoholic father as well. It’s also a movie now, and I’m excited to see it.

6. Ghosted– Rosie Walsh

A new release that I can’t wait to get my hands on. According to Amazon reviews, this novel has not one, but two plot twists that you never would have seen coming. It’s a romantic mystery, perfect for a day at the beach.

7. You Are a Badass– Jen Sincero

I know this book has been out for a while, but I absolutely love it. This “how to” book inspired me to get off my ass and make the most of my life. She also encourages people to do what they dream, even if it seems like it’s out of your grasp. I highly recommend not just reading it once, but reading it a couple times, and taking some notes.

8. Influencer– Brittany Hennessy

I’ve recently decided to take my blogging and love for writing to the next level. I absolutely have to add this book to my “must read” list. This is another “how to” book that explains how to build a personal brand in social media, and to make money for your creations.

9. The Obsession– Nora Roberts

Because you can’t have a summer reading list without Nora Roberts. I read this last summer and my nose was buried in it the whole time. It’s a romance novel with some serious crime written in. It’s the perfect blend so that it’s not too sappy of a novel.

10. Ready Player One– Ernest Cline

The big hit movie of the year is actually a book. This is on my TBR list as well, but I’ve heard from many friends that the book is a lot better than the movie. That’ll be tough, because it’s honestly one of my favorite movies. The story is about a young kid fighting against big corporation in virtual reality. It’s a little bit of sci-fi, but pop culture-y, too.
